// FEATURES

Smart, not literal.

ReadBack doesn't read symbols out loud. It turns each block of a Claude Code session into pleasant, natural speech — and skips the noise.

BlockSpoken as
Table“Table with 3 rows and 3 columns. Columns: Service, Requests, latency. Row 1…”
Code“A Swift code block defining function fibonacci” → “…returns the sum of the two previous numbers.”
Diagram“A flowchart-style diagram with about 3 connections.”
Question“Claude is asking you a question. The options are: one…; two…. Or choose Other.”
File editsilent — listed as “Edited Narrator.swift”; click to hear “Changed the row limit from 10 to 20.”
Prosemarkdown stripped — no asterisks, backticks or raw URLs read aloud

// VOICES

A distinct voice for every session

ReadBack ships no voices of its own — it uses the system voices built into macOS, which you download free from System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content. Add the Premium or Enhanced voices you like, and ReadBack assigns a different one to each session automatically, so you can tell which agent is talking the instant it starts. Master volume, speed and mute all apply live to the sentence being spoken.

// LIVE

Reads updates the moment they land

ReadBack tails every active Claude Code session and narrates new output as it appears — a finished task, a new error, a question waiting on you. Audio auto-follows the session that just spoke, with activity badges on the others.

// QUESTIONS

Never miss a prompt

When Claude asks a question with AskUserQuestion, ReadBack reads the prompt and every option aloud the moment Claude is waiting — even though the transcript on disk doesn't contain it yet. A tiny opt-in hook makes that possible.

// MANY MACHINES

Every machine you run, in one place

A dependency-free Python agent streams Claude Code from a remote box or VM to ReadBack over your own LAN — push if the other machine can reach your Mac, pull if only your Mac can reach it. Add a shared token to lock it down. Streams never leave your network.

// PRIVATE BY DEFAULT

Local-first, always

ReadBack only reads Claude Code transcript files — it never writes to them. Nothing is uploaded. Smart descriptions run through your own Claude subscription; remote streaming stays on your LAN. ~100 MB of memory, mostly shared frameworks. No Electron.
